What is a Business Analyst?

A Business Analysts must analyse and synthesize information provided by a large number of people who interact with the business, such as customers, staff, IT professionals, and executives.

The Business Analyst is responsible for eliciting the actual needs of stakeholders, not simply their expressed desires. In many cases, the Business Analyst will also work to facilitate communication between organizational units.

In particular, Business Analysts often play a central role in aligning the needs of business units with the capabilities delivered by information technology, and may serve as a “translator” between those groups.

How does he do it ?

  • Gathering requirements :  define and describe in a clear way all objectives, business cases, uses cases, a clear scope and possible risks.
  • By adequate approach and methodology :  determine how requirements can and must be documented as a good starting point for any RFP, project, …
  • Facilitating workshops : from project initiation until project review; make sure the right things are discussed at the right time and place, with the right people.
  • Information- and data analyses : what data are where and how available, what’s their quality level and how are they related.
  • Data Modelling : building data-models that can be used as well today as in the future.
  • Issue- and Risk management : identify upcoming problems and risks and take appropriate steps.
  • Follow up of all realisations as, or in close collaboration with, a program- or project manager.
  • Prepare users for the upcoming changes, as, or in close collaboration with, a change manager.
  • Assisting in, or preparing test scripts and further coordination of the execution.
  • Assisting in, or preparing the content of user-training (with follow up and train-the trainer sessions).

The position of a business analyst within an organisation

The business analyst gives support where business processes are being put in place or optimized.  He moves like a spider in the web between business departments and supportive divisions like IT, Marketing and HR.  He works in close collaboration with business architects, business process owners, program- and  project managers.

Where a business architect develops a long term, strategical vision , the business analyst take care of direct changes and improvements of processes, with or without the support of information technology.
